1968 TVR Tuscan SE LWB for sale on BaT Auctions – ending June 28 (Lot #152,509)
This 1968 TVR Tuscan SE is a long-wheelbase example that is said to have been sold new through distributor Gerry Sagerman’s TVR Cars in Lynbrook, New York. Chassis MAL006 was subsequently taken off the road in 1971 following an accident and spent the next three decades in storage before being recommissioned. The car features fiberglass bodywork finished in blue and is powered by a 302ci Ford V8 mated to a toploader four-speed manual transmission. On the inside, low-back bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl are accompanied by a wood dash as well as a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. Further equipment includes an independent suspension, Koni front shocks, Girling front disc brakes, and 15″ knock-off wire wheels. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in 2021, and recommissioning work in 2023 is said to have involved installing a Holley four-barrel carburetor, cleaning the fuel system, servicing the brakes, and more as described below. This Tuscan is now offered with the removed Autolite four-barrel carburetor and additional spare parts along with a clean Florida title in their name listing the car as 1969 model.
The fiberglass-bodied Tuscan debuted in 1967 and featured Vixen-style bodywork atop an SWB chassis developed from the earlier V8-powered Griffith. An updated version riding on a 90-inch wheelbase was subsequently introduced before being replaced by the second series of LWB Tuscans, which shared chassis and body components with the contemporary Vixen S2 and were assigned chassis numbers beginning with MAL.
The body of this early MAL example is bonded to the chassis and is finished in blue. SE badging appears on the B-pillars, and further details include a bullet-style left mirror, fender vents, corner bumpers, Lucas sealed-beam headlights, and Mk II Ford Cortina–sourced taillights. The selling dealer notes that the paint is in poor condition, and cracks in the nose of the car from the aforementioned 1971 accident can be seen up close in the gallery.
The 15″ wire wheels feature 72 spokes and are secured by knock-off hubs. They are wrapped in older Pirelli Cinturato rubber, and a spare with a Dunlop SP41 tire is stored in the rear cargo compartment. The car rides on an independent suspension with a sway bar and Koni shocks up front as well as dual shocks at each corner out back. Braking is handled by Girling front discs paired with rear drums. Recent work is said to have involved rebuilding the brake servo unit as well as replacing the master cylinder.
The cockpit houses low-back bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl with patterned central inserts, which extend to the door panels. Wood trim adorns the dash as well as the center stack, and further details include a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, a sliding rear-view mirror, and lap belts.
The split-spoke steering wheel is paired with a reverse-lockout shifter and frames a Smiths tachometer and 160-mph speedometer. Centrally mounted AC auxiliary gauges monitor oil pressure, coolant temperature, amperage, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 6k miles.
The front-hinged hood opens to reveal a 302ci Ford V8 that wears Cobra-branded valve covers. The selling dealer notes that a smog pump is equipped, and work in 2023 is said to have involved fitting a replacement battery, radiator overflow tank, and coolant hoses as well as installing a Holley four-barrel carburetor, cleaning the fuel system, and performing fluid changes.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a Ford toploader four-speed manual transmission. The rear exhaust mounts were replaced in 2023. The selling dealer notes rust on the chassis and various underside components.
The removed Autolite four-barrel carburetor is included in the sale along with additional spare parts that can be viewed in the gallery.
