1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe G50 Art Car by Marcel Barbeau for sale on BaT Auctions – ending February 24 (Lot #99,352)
This 1987 Porsche 911 is a US-specification Carrera coupe that was refinished by Yves Thibeault under the direction of artist Marcel Barbeau in 2013 as number four in the Art Cars Project, in which a series of artists completed uniquely painted Porsche 911s with a presentation at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Canada. Power comes from a 3.2-liter flat-six paired with a G50 five-speed manual transaxle, and equipment includes 16″ Fuchs wheels, a rear spoiler, a power-operated sunroof, and a Bluetooth-capable JVC stereo. The current owner acquired the car in 2015 and work completed in 2022 is said to have consisted of a tune-up and replacing the fuel pump. This Carrera coupe is now offered in Quebec, Canada, with a tool kit, spare and removed parts, and Art Cars Project literature.
The custom paintwork was designed by Marcel Barbeau and applied by Yves Thibeault. Equipment includes a “whale tail” rear spoiler, a power sunroof, and impact bumpers.
This is a re-list after the vehicle was previously sold on BaT in July 2022 and the winning bidder failed to follow through with their commitment to purchase. This was not due to any fault with the vehicle. The winner has been banned from future participation on BaT and their buyer’s fee was not refunded.
The right-rear quarter panel bears the signatures of both artists. Close-up photographs of the livery can be seen in the gallery below.
The 16″ Fuchs wheels feature black spokes, bright lips, and custom-painted center caps, and they are mounted with 205/55 Continental ContiSportContact front tires and 225/50 Centennial Interceptor HR4 rear tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs.
The front seats are trimmed in black upholstery and amenities include cruise control, power windows, and a Bluetooth-capable JVC stereo hooked to Boston speakers. The seller reports that the air-conditioning system components have been removed but are included in the sale.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a central tachometer with a 6,300-rpm redline as well as a 170-mph speedometer, a Quarz clock, and gauges for oil level, oil pressure, oil temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer is said to have been replaced and shows 308k miles, approximately 6k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.2-liter M930/25 flat-six features Bosch Motronic engine management and was factory rated at 217 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Engine components have been refinished in yellow and red, and the seller reports that the fuel pump was replaced and a tune-up performed in June 2022.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a G50 five-speed manual transaxle.
Information regarding the Art Cars Project as well as additional images of the cars and process involved are displayed in the gallery below.
The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists registration history in Massachusetts and Quebec, Canada, through its most recent entry in March 2016. A potential odometer rollback is noted from February 2009.
