Converting To A Hydraulic Clutch Is Simple With A Malwood USA Hydraulic Pedal System


Every once in awhile, a really good idea comes along that just makes everything easier and better. The performance industry is slowly converting the old mechanical clutch linkage to hydraulics, but this most often requires mounting a clutch master cylinder on the firewall. 

While not a difficult process, it is imperative that the angle of the actuating rod from the clutch pedal to the master be as straight as possible. If the master is bolted in at the wrong angle, the master cylinder piston seal will tear and begin to leak.

The Malwood hydraulic master cylinder is mounted directly on the clutch pedal, making the installation much easier. We bolted one of these to our ‘66 Chevelle in about two hours. The reservoir can be mounted almost anywhere. The Malwood kit also includes a new cross-shaft bolt and plastic bushings.

So a very clever designer at a company called Malwood came up with the idea of mounting the clutch master directly on the clutch pedal assembly itself, hiding it underneath the dash. This leaves only the hydraulic master reservoir to be mounted on the firewall in an unobtrusive place. Or, the reservoir could also be mounted under the dash as long as it higher than the master cylinder to properly gravity feed fluid to the master.

These custom-made assemblies are built for over 70 different GM, Ford, and Mopar cars and trucks, including most of the popular muscle car applications.

In addition, they also offer an interesting hydraulic throw-out bearing with features not found on other bearings. The Malwood Cherry hydraulic release bearing offers a full swivel position of the bleeder line so that the bleeder line can be positioned at the top. This provides the position to eliminate all the air out of the system which will make the clutch release much smoother and more efficient.
